Pongal pot kolam
India is known for its different cultural festivities celebrated throughout the country. Here, people
celebrate and offer prayers for harvesting and other reasons. Pongal Festival is one of them that is
highly significant for the Tamils where they offer prayer in the form of thanksgiving to the Sun God.
Pongal means “to boil” and during this time, people cook new rice that symbolizes their prosperity.
Apart from it, it holds the enormous importance in the solar calendar as the sole Hindu festival. It is
celebrated with lots of happiness and enthusiasm among the people of India as 'Makara Sankaranthi' as
the sun enters 10th house of zodiac sign, allotted for Makara.
This ancient festival is celebrated with
various rituals in the winter season especially in the month of January during the time of harvested the
crops. The people of the state of Tamil Nadu believe that it is mandatory to do all the customs and say
thanks to the Almighty for providing the mankind necessary solar energy. During Pongal, the Tamils
decorate their houses with Pongal Kolam and enjoys with each other to make the festivity happier.
